Sukkot day 1 on Shabbat — no weekly parasha

Torah: Vayikra 22:26–23:44 · Maftir: Bamidbar 29:12–16 · Haftarah: Zechariah 14. Sephardim do not say Hoshanot on Saturday.

Clouds of Glory (Sukkah 11b / SA OC 625): SA follows Rabbi Eliezer — the sukkah recalls Hashem’s Clouds of Glory; sitting there is sitting in His protection.

Four kinds (Vayikra Rabbah 30:12): Etrog (taste+smell), lulav (taste), hadas (smell), aravah (neither). Bind them together — every Jew belongs in the bundle.

Ushpizin (Zohar Emor 103b): Seven exalted guests visit nightly; honor them by hosting people in need.

From Yom Kippur into the sukkah

From the holiest day in shul to the most down-to-earth mitzvah: eating, talking, and sleeping in a hut. Ben Ish Chai (following SA) says to start the sukkah the night Yom Kippur ends — go from one mitzvah into the next. Closeness from Yom Kippur moves into meals, conversations, and family time under the schach.

Teen takeaway: joy in the temporary booth is the mitzvah.

1. Candles Fri 6:29 PM — shel Shabbat v’shel Yom Tov. Sephardim: Shehecheyanu at Kiddush, not candles.
2. No eruv tavshilin this year (YT Sat–Sun; Mon = chol hamoed).
3. No arba minim Saturday; first taking Sunday with Shehecheyanu.
4. Fri-night Kiddush in sukkah: Kiddush → leishev → Shehecheyanu. First night: kezayit of bread obligated.
5. No preparing on Shabbat for Sunday. Sunday: cook for Sunday only, from existing flame.
6. Second night: nothing before 7:26 PM; existing flame; Yaknehaz Kiddush.
7. Heavy rain exempts; first night many wait then eat a kezayit in the sukkah.
8. Simchat Yom Tov includes making family happy.
