THE TWIN BRIEF
Reading
Vayera · Sephardi Haftarah Melachim II 4:1–23
Parasha: Genesis 18:1–22:24 · Maftir: 22:20–24 · Haftarah: II Kings 4:1–23 for Sephardim (Ashkenazim 4:1–37), Elisha and the Shunamite woman. No special Shabbat; Mevarchim Kislev is next week.
Teen summary: Three days after his brit, Avraham hosts three travelers (angels) in brutal heat; Sarah is promised a son and laughs. Avraham bargains for Sodom from 50 down to 10. Lot is rescued; his wife becomes a pillar of salt. Avimelech takes Sarah and returns her. Yitzchak is born, Hagar and Yishmael are sent away, Avraham makes a treaty at Be’er Sheva, and then the Akeidah: a ram instead of Yitzchak. Rivka is born (22:23).
Stories
“I don’t believe you” · Sodom’s bed · The surprise river
Bava Metzia 86b: on the third day after his brit, Hashem visits Avraham and takes the sun “out of its sheath” so no travelers will bother him. Eliezer reports “nobody’s out there.” Avraham: “I don’t believe you,” goes out himself, and the guests appear.
Sanhedrin 109b: Sodom’s one-size-fits-all guest bed: too tall, they cut you; too short, they stretch you. Eliezer: “I vowed not to lie on a bed since my mother died.” Be the tent, not the bed.
Tanchuma Vayera 22: on the way to the Akeidah, the Satan appears as an old man, then a young man, then a river up to Avraham’s neck. Hashem dries it up. The Satan’s last try, “I heard it’ll be a lamb,” gets: “A liar isn’t believed even when he tells the truth.”
Dvar Torah · Ben Ish Chai, Derashot, Vayera (on 18:4–5)
Be Like Water
“Yukach na me’at mayim” (18:4): why would a host about to serve a feast offer “a little water”? The Ben Ish Chai: me’at hints at humility, making yourself small. But it must be complete, inside and out, like mayim: water flows to the lowest place, and it’s the same inside as outside. מים = 40+10+40 = 90, and the hidden filler letters when you spell each letter out (ם, ו״ד, ם) also = 90. No humble-bragging.
“Wash your feet”: clean off the little sins we trample with our heels, where the yetzer hara gets us most. “Pat lechem” hints at two loaves, like lechem mishneh, since Avraham treated hosting as a seudat mitzvah. “Ki al ken avartem”: you did me the favor by coming; and “al ken,” a guest says ken to whatever the host asks (see Pesachim 86b). The guests answer: “Ken ta’aseh ka’asher dibarta.”
Teen takeaway: be like water. Go low, stay real, match the inside to the outside. And as a guest, say “ken.”
Halacha checklist · Sephardi / SA / YY
Six points for a Shabbat full of guests
- Candles 5:35 PM: Sephardim say the beracha, then light (SA OC 263:5; Yalkut Yosef). Lighting first and covering the eyes is the Rema’s Ashkenazi custom.
- Hachnasat orchim is greater than receiving the Shechinah (Shabbat 127a); you may even clear storeroom boxes for guests on Shabbat (SA OC 333:1).
- Host breaks the bread (SA OC 167:14); the guest leads bentching to bless the host (SA OC 201:1).
- Bikur cholim on Shabbat: “Shabbat hi miliz’ok, u’refuah kerovah lavo, v’rachamav merubim, v’shivtu b’shalom” (SA OC 287:1).
- DST ends Sun Nov 1, 2:00 AM, after Shabbat. Check timers and Sunday alarms before candles. Next Friday candles 4:27 PM.
- Havdalah sitting per the Shulchan Aruch (OC 296:6); Rema: Ashkenazim stand. Shabbat ends 6:43 PM.
