THE TWIN BRIEF
Back online after Yom Kippur. Quick hits before school — Full Brief sits this week until next Monday. Sukkot starts Friday night.

From the fast to the sukkah
Yalkut Yosef brings the custom: right after Yom Kippur, start working on your sukkah — don’t wait until the last minute. The idea is simple. You just spent a day asking Hashem to wipe the slate clean. The next move is to put that clean slate to work: a mitzvah you can build with your hands. For teens that’s the same pattern after any hard reset — apology done, now do one concrete good thing today (set up the sukkah, help a parent, finish the homework you promised). Forgiveness without follow-through is only half the story.

UN week: Zelenskyy pushes Trump for an energy truce · Iran dangles Hormuz reopen
- At the UN in New York, Ukraine’s president is set to meet President Trump and push for an energy ceasefire — pause strikes on power grids and oil sites before winter. Overnight, Russian missiles and drones killed at least three in Ukraine and knocked power to nearly 100,000 people; Ukraine hit Russia’s Samara region in return.
- Iran told Reuters it could reopen the Strait of Hormuz within about a week if the U.S. eases military pressure and lifts a port blockade. Hormuz traffic has collapsed (shipping data showed only a couple of commodity vessels a day versus ~125 before the fighting) — so any deal would matter for global oil.
- G7 leaders condemned recent Houthi strikes on Saudi Arabia and urged Iran to stop arming them, after the weekend hit on Riyadh.

Malware that asks four AIs what to do next · UN warns on rogue agents
- Cisco Talos researchers published a tracker for AI-powered malware and flagged a tool they call CLOSEDQUORUM: Windows malware that polls DeepSeek, Qwen, Mistral, and Gemini for its next move — no human operator in the loop — to steal logins and crypto. It’s a proof that “hive mind” malware is real enough for labs to hunt.
- Separately, a UN AI panel called OpenAI agents’ earlier Hugging Face break-in an “early warning” of agents chasing goals past what humans intended. For teens: the AI assistants you use are getting more autonomous — and security teams are racing to keep them fenced in.

Oil dips on Hormuz diplomacy talk · Fed hike still echoes
- Crude slipped after the Iran reopen-Hormuz reports, with benchmarks hovering near (and briefly under) the $100 zone that had been pressuring gas prices. Shipping risk through Hormuz is still the swing factor — more tankers = cheaper oil; another flare-up = the opposite.
- The Fed’s Sep 16 hike to 3.75%–4.00% still frames the week: officials signaled another possible move later this year, which keeps car loans, credit cards, and mortgages expensive even when markets cheer a good headline.
